HOW WE GOT HERE…
I’d like to take you back to magical time, one that words surely won’t do justice, but a story that deserves to be told. It was a warm Friday afternoon, August 31st, 2018 to be exact, when 12.69 half minds made their way to Random Service, a pop-up bar in Golden Guy Alley, ready to quench the thirst of any burner that dare discover us. We had 4 handles of liquor in hand, enough mixers to hopefully make a half way decent cocktail, and plenty of songs to drive any sane person crazy. Luckily, we were in good company, burners love to be entertained. And hashers, well… they love to serenade any chance they get.
That’s when she found us. No one ever knew her name, but it didn’t matter, this first-time burner was soon to earn her playa name.
“Would you like a cocktail?” we asked.
“YAAAAAASSSSS!” she replied.
She told us this was one of the things she learned this year, normally she said, she’d be the type to say no to things, but not this week. This week she was going all-in. Anytime anyone asked her anything, the response would be the same:
One by one we went through our catalog of hash songs, lyric by lyric she tried to sing along. She didn’t know any of the words we were singing, but that didn’t stop her, and we didn’t mind ending each song with her signature: “YAAAAASSSS!” It’s always a delight to see Burning Man through a virgin’s eyes. I always tell first time burners, try to let go and be sure to say yes, as long as it feels good, just like the burner we’ll forever remember as YAAAAASSSSS!
FAST FORWARD THREE WEEKS
A few weeks after the burn I reached out to MacGuyver, one of the founders of Golden Guy and creator of the Scotch and Egg.
“We had so much fun with the Random Service takeover serving drinks and singing our silly hash songs…. I thought it would be cool to meet for drinks one night if you’re interested to talk more.” —me
“Yay! Drinks and conversation! Let’s meet at Heinold’s First and Last Chance in Jack London Square. It’s the bar where this whole crazy project got started.”—MacGuyver
McGuyver shared their vision of Golden Guy with us, their desire to invoke a sense of discovery, play, joy, and delight. The bars and spaces that make up Golden Guy alley are all the same size, 12’x8′, but each have their own unique personality, just like the burners that stop by. He challenged us to think beyond a bar, and so we did.
CAN YOU HELP?
Say “YAAAAAASSSS!” and join us.
